Giardino a Lago

Maxine Fioroni spent her entire youth in South Africa, returning occasionally to her father Danilo’s hometown of Carate Urio for holidays. Two years ago, she made the life-changing decision to move permanently to Italy and take over her family’s historic restaurant—a well-known spot among locals. While preserving some of the original architectural elements and the restaurant’s traditional role as a bar and eatery, Maxine gave it a fresh, more contemporary and international twist, blending the modern art of mixology with a simple yet flavorful food menu. Among the most appreciated dishes are hamburgers, club sandwiches, and generous platters of local cured meats and cheeses.

The cocktail list is constantly evolving, offering creative and surprising flavor combinations. “Our menu includes a series of signature cocktails that change regularly based on the seasonal availability of ingredients,” Maxine explains. “In summer, they’re fresh and fruity; in winter, they become bolder and more enveloping.” One of the few cocktails that never leaves the menu—aside from the timeless classics—is the Amarulatini, crafted with a rich South African cream liqueur. “We also feature a curated selection of wines and spirits from South Africa; I love the idea of bringing together these two parts of myself that reflect the countries my family is connected to.”

That South African connection is felt in the atmosphere of Giardino a Lago too. The lush greenery surrounding the venue is echoed in the decor, harmoniously paired with carefully chosen gold details. This dialogue between interior and exterior design is also a subtle tribute to the colors of the Springboks, South Africa’s iconic national rugby team.

What makes this peaceful lakeside retreat truly magical is its charming courtyard, shaded by a romantic pergola intertwined with wisteria and Virginia creeper—offering cool respite on hot summer days. At the entrance, a majestic magnolia tree fills the air and the nearby piazza with its fragrance. Just steps away stands Hotel Fioroni, owned by Danilo’s brother. “With Giardino a Lago, I wanted to breathe new life into a piece of this town’s history in a way that’s in tune with the times,” Maxine shares. “I love chatting with local residents who remember the old restaurant and share funny anecdotes. I feel that, along with the community and other local entrepreneurs, we’re helping this area grow.”
